Data is changing the way we produce, consume and live. It is undeniable that today’s society is data-driven and that being able to make the most of its potential has for some time now become a priority for the scientific, industrial and business community. This is why the European Commission published the European Data Strategy to lead the way towards the creation of Common European Data Spaces. The strategy aims to boost innovation, competitiveness and sustainability by unlocking the potential of data while ensuring privacy, security and trust. By breaking down data silos and fostering collaboration, the EU hopes to boost economic growth and address societal challenges more effectively.
The EXA4MIND project, funded by the Horizon Europe programme, is a natural partner in the development of these common data spaces. EXA4MIND aims to revolutionise data analytics by developing a platform for Extreme Data mining and enabling advanced data analytics workflows. One of its key objectives is to integrate automated and distributed high-performance data analytics (HPDA) applications with European data ecosystems.
In the sector of data-ecosystem connectivity, EXA4MIND focuses on:
- Efficient Extreme Data Processing bringing together Supercomputing, best-of-breed data management systems, and European Data Ecosystems.
- Integration of database data with EUDAT, European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and European Data Spaces.
- Development of a mechanism for assigning persistent identifiers and metadata to data products in databases, facilitating also a FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) treatment of research data.
- Development of concepts for long-term persistence and archiving of database data.
Progress beyond the state of the art
EXA4MIND aims to bridge the gap between competitive supercomputing environments, best-of-breed data management systems including databases, and ecosystems for European-scale data exchange. In particular the framework of European Data Spaces will facilitate well-controlled data sharing, e.g. for industry and SMEs, as well as an open and FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) data policy important for scientific research. EXA4MIND will contribute to European data ecosystems: On the one hand, it shall develop mechanisms to exchange database data with Data Spaces and EUDAT (where data handling is based on files), supporting important and trustworthy standards such as the Dataspace Protocol of IDSA. On the other hand, it aims at FAIR publication of scientific data from databases, including the assignment of metadata and persistent identifiers.
Data accessibility with EXA4MIND – trust, confidentiality and Open Science
To conclude, the European Data Strategy’s goal of creating European Common Data Spaces is a crucial step towards maximising the potential of data while ensuring privacy, security and trust. EXA4MIND – as a Horizon Europe funded project – supports this goal by its novel techniques. It considers a controlled exchange of enterprise data – with-well defined access rights – across Europe just as well as the EC’s ambitions for Open Science, reflecting – for example – in the European Open Science Cloud. Thus, EXA4MIND boosts the re-use of R&D results across European companies just as well as scientific data reuse and reproducibility.
